The medical-surgical unit provides acute care to patients of all ages who need hospitalization for a medical problem or following surgery. Patients admitted to this area may require cardiac monitoring per telemetry, IV therapy, and frequent health assessments by nursing; or rehabilitation therapy by physical therapists, occupational therapists or speech pathologists.
A nursing staff of RN's and LPNs works closely with the patient's physician, social worker, dietitian and other health care workers to provide a specialized plan of care for the patient. A charge nurse is always present to provide information and answer questions from patients and family.
When a patient no longer needs all the acute care that the hospital provides, but still needs full time skilled nursing care and other health services which cannot be provided in the home or a nursing home environment, the physician may order swing bed care.
Swing Bed care is provided by RNs and LPNs and other required therapists. Weekly care conferences are conducted with all of the involved health care providers and the patient/family to discuss and plan the ongoing care needs of the patient. The social worker works closely with the patient and family in evaluating discharge needs.
Payment for the swing Bed program is made through Medicare, Self-Pay or Medicaid. Medicare and medicaid coverage is provided according to the requirements and eligibility standards established by these programs.
